The commissioning of the new LNG regasification terminal at Chhara, Gujarat by HPCL LNG Limited, a subsidiary of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), marks a significant milestone in India’s energy infrastructure. With an investment of ₹4,750 crores, the terminal has a capacity of 5 MMTPA and is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for LNG receipt, storage, regasification, and supply to the gas grid.

Located in the Gir-Somnath District, the terminal received its first LNG cargo on January 6, with cargo discharge completed on January 12, 2025. The facility will operate on a tolling model, offering access to third-party users through long-term capacity booking contracts and spot cargo agreements. This move is expected to enhance the availability of clean and efficient energy sources in the region.

The successful commissioning of the LNG terminal underscores HPCL’s commitment to expanding its footprint in the energy sector and supporting the country’s energy security objectives. With the terminal set to begin commercial operations shortly, it is poised to play a crucial role in meeting the growing demand for natural gas in Gujarat and beyond.

The development of the LNG terminal aligns with India’s transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy landscape. By enabling the efficient import, storage, and distribution of LNG, the terminal will contribute to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing energy security in the region. This milestone reflects the government’s efforts to promote the use of natural gas as a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels.

Overall, the commissioning of the LNG terminal in Chhara, Gujarat highlights the significance of strategic investments in energy infrastructure to meet the country’s growing energy needs. As India continues to prioritize sustainable development and reduce its carbon footprint, initiatives like this will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the energy sector.
