Lebanon has a new president in the form of Joseph Aoun, who has stepped into the role after a presidential vacuum of over two years. Coming from a military background, Aoun’s rise to the presidency marks a significant moment in Lebanon’s history.

Born in 1964, Aoun hails from Sin el-Fil, a suburb of Beirut. His military career began in 1983 during the Lebanese civil war, and he steadily climbed the ranks, receiving training both in Lebanon and abroad, including with the US counterterrorism programme. Aoun’s success in targeting ISIL fighters in the mountains between Syria and Lebanon further solidified his reputation as a capable leader.

During Aoun’s time as army commander, Lebanon faced severe economic and political crises, with widespread corruption and mismanagement plaguing the government. The devastating Beirut explosion in 2020 only exacerbated these issues, leaving the Lebanese people disillusioned with their leadership. Despite these challenges, Aoun’s leadership during Israel’s war on Gaza in 2023 helped pave the way for his presidency.

Aoun’s presidency brings hope for a new beginning in Lebanon, with promises to rebuild war-torn areas and prioritize national unity. However, the road ahead is filled with challenges, and Aoun will need to prove to the Lebanese people that he can truly make a difference in their lives. With a focus on enforcing the state’s monopoly on weapons and rebuilding the country, Aoun’s presidency marks a crucial turning point for Lebanon.
