India’s efforts to secure critical mineral resources through bilateral Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with various countries are part of a strategic move to ensure resource security, particularly in the realm of mineral supplies. The Ministry of Mines is actively engaging with countries in South America, Africa, and Australia for collaboration in the areas of geology, exploration, and processing of critical minerals.

One of the key focus areas for India is the search for lithium, a crucial component for various applications such as electric vehicles, mobile phones, and renewable energy solutions. India has signed MoUs with countries like Australia, Argentina, Peru, Chile, and Colombia for the supply and exploration of lithium resources. In South America, India has started non-invasive exploration activities across lithium blocks and is actively pursuing agreements for the supply of lithium and other resources.

Africa is also a significant region for India’s critical minerals quest, with countries like Zimbabwe, Zambia, Morocco, Mali, and others being targeted for resources like copper, cobalt, and lithium. Indian companies, such as Vedanta, have a presence in activities like copper mining in Zambia and coal mining in Mozambique. New reserves are being discovered in African nations, and India is looking to partner with them for mapping activities and investments.

The Ministry of Mines is working on finalizing MoUs for technology transfer and expertise in offshore mineral processing with countries like Namibia, South Africa, Netherlands, Sweden, and France. These agreements will pave the way for knowledge sharing and collaboration in the field of mineral processing.

Overall, India’s proactive approach in forging international partnerships for critical minerals highlights its commitment to ensuring resource security and bolstering its strategic reserves. By tapping into diverse sources of minerals and leveraging technological know-how from around the world, India is positioning itself as a key player in the global mineral supply chain.
