Smriti Mandhana’s Stellar 2024: A Contender for ICC ODI Women’s Cricketer of the Year

In the world of women’s cricket, few names resonate with excellence like Smriti Mandhana. The Indian vice-captain has established herself as a powerhouse, especially in the One Day International (ODI) format. As we evaluate her performance over the past year, it’s no surprise that she has been nominated for the ICC ODI Women’s Cricketer of the Year award for 2024, alongside other remarkable players like Chamari Athapaththu, Laura Wolvaardt, and Annabel Sutherland.

A Prolific Run-Scoring Year

Mandhana’s 2024 season has been nothing short of exhilarating. With a staggering tally of 747 runs from just 13 innings, her average stood at an impressive 57.46. This included four centuries and three half-centuries, marking her as a crucial player in India’s ODI lineup. Such remarkable consistency not only exemplifies her skill but also her ability to perform under pressure, especially as the Women’s ODI World Cup approaches in 2025.

She made headlines in June with a pair of centuries against South Africa, showcasing her ability to convert starts into match-defining scores. Her top score of 136 came with a remarkable strike rate of 95.15, indicating her aggressive approach at the crease.

The Competition

While Mandhana’s accomplishments are commendable, she faces fierce competition for the prestigious award. Laura Wolvaardt from South Africa emerged as the second-highest run-scorer in women’s ODIs, amassing 697 runs in 12 innings with an average of 87.12. Her consistency, highlighted by three centuries and three half-centuries, makes her a strong contender.

Chamari Athapaththu from Sri Lanka also had a prolific year, scoring 458 runs in nine innings at an impressive average of 65.42, which includes one century and two half-centuries. Her ability to anchor the innings while also accelerating when needed reflects her versatile game.

From Australia, Annabel Sutherland made her mark as a key player, scoring 369 runs in nine innings at an average of 52.71, including two centuries and one fifty. As Australia’s highest run-scorer in ODIs for 2024, Sutherland’s all-round capabilities further enhance her candidacy.

The Bigger Picture: Women’s Cricket Growth

The recognition of players like Mandhana, Wolvaardt, Athapaththu, and Sutherland is not just about individual performances; it speaks to the growing competitiveness and visibility of women’s cricket. With the landscape of women’s cricket evolving rapidly, players are breaking records and raising the profile of the sport globally.

As the sport heads towards the next Women’s ODI World Cup in India, performances from athletes like Mandhana play a crucial role in inspiring the next generation of cricketing talent. The increasing recognition and fans’ interest in women’s cricket underscore the importance of continuing to highlight female athletes’ achievements.

Conclusion

As the nominees for the ICC ODI Women’s Cricketer of the Year award are revealed, Smriti Mandhana stands out not only for her impressive statistics but also for her role in promoting women’s cricket on an international stage. Whether she clinches the title or not, Mandhana’s performance in 2024 has set a high benchmark, inspiring her teammates and young cricketers around the world.

The future looks bright for women’s cricket, and players like Mandhana are at the forefront, shaping a narrative of excellence, resilience, and boundless potential in the sport. As we look forward to the upcoming World Cup and beyond, one thing remains clear: Smriti Mandhana is indeed a luminary in the realm of women’s cricket.
