Due to the extreme heatwave and rising temperatures, all schools in Kamrup (Metro) district, mainly in Guwahati city, will be closed for four days from September 24 to 27.

The district elementary education officer (DEEO) mentioned that there have been multiple cases of students falling ill and fainting due to the scorching heat and dehydration in various schools.

As a precautionary measure, the DEEO officially ordered the closure of all government, provincialized, and private schools in Kamrup Metro district during this period to protect students from the harmful effects of the heat.

In recent days, Guwahati experienced unusually high temperatures, with the maximum temperature reaching 37.9 degrees Celsius, which is significantly higher than normal. The minimum temperature was also recorded at 28.2 degrees Celsius, indicating intense heat conditions.

To address the ongoing heatwave, the DEEO emphasized the importance of early school hours and other measures to ensure the well-being of students. Additionally, the India Meteorological Department forecasted cloudy weather with occasional rain or thundershowers in Guwahati over the next few days.

In light of the challenging weather conditions, districts across Assam, including Kamrup Metropolitan, Cachar, and Barpeta, have been taking precautions to protect residents from the heatwave.

School authorities in Dibrugarh district were also advised to follow specific guidelines to mitigate the adverse effects of the heatwave on students’ health. Informal guidelines were issued, in consultation with the district commissioner, to ensure the safety and well-being of students during this challenging period.

Overall, authorities are working diligently to safeguard students and the community from the extreme heatwave conditions in the region.
