BJP turmoil in Madhya Pradesh: MLAs raise concerns, party downplays issue

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Madhya Pradesh is currently facing internal turmoil as several legislators have publicly expressed their dissatisfaction, with some even resigning from their positions.

One such incident involved Deori MLA, Brij Bihari Pateria, who submitted his resignation to the speaker of the Madhya Pradesh assembly due to the police’s refusal to register an FIR in a snake bite case. However, Pateria later withdrew his resignation, attributing it to a momentary outburst and stating that the issue had been resolved.

Pateria was previously associated with the Congress party but had switched to the BJP, winning his Deori Assembly constituency in a by-election and then re-elected in the subsequent Assembly elections.

In another instance, BJP MLA Pradeep Patel from Mauganj caused a stir by visiting the Superintendent of Police’s office and accusing the police of shielding the liquor mafia. This incident further added to the growing tensions within the ruling party.

Former minister and BJP MLA Sanjay Pathak also expressed concerns about his safety, claiming that his Aadhaar card had been tampered with and suspicious individuals were monitoring his residences in various locations.

While the BJP has sought to play down these incidents, the opposition Congress has seized upon them as evidence of internal strife within the ruling party. The Congress has pointed out that similar issues were raised by their party in the past, only to be dismissed by the BJP.

The BJP had secured a resounding victory in the 2023 Madhya Pradesh assembly elections, winning 163 seats compared to the Congress’ 66 seats. However, the recent internal discord within the BJP has raised questions about the stability of the government in the state.
