GM’s Next-Gen Hands-Free Driving System Set to Revolutionize Roadways

General Motors (GM) is set to revolutionize autonomous driving with a groundbreaking upgrade to their Super Cruise system. This new Level 3 (L3) driving system will allow drivers to take their eyes off the road under certain conditions, a significant advancement from today’s hands-free systems.

Unlike fully self-driving cars like Waymo’s Level 4 system, Level 3 is designed for highway driving at reduced speeds, where the driver remains in control but can temporarily stop paying attention. GM’s upcoming upgrade to Super Cruise will make it one of the few automakers offering eyes-off, hands-off driving capabilities.

Current systems like Tesla’s Autopilot and GM’s Super Cruise are considered Level 2 (L2) advanced driver assistance systems, requiring drivers to keep their eyes on the road while the vehicle assists with driving tasks. Moving to Level 3 will allow drivers to let the car handle more of the workload without constant supervision, though they still need to be ready to intervene if necessary.

Super Cruise utilizes advanced technologies like lidar maps, high-precision GPS, radar sensors, and a driver-attention monitoring system to maintain lane position, change lanes, and adjust speed automatically. Initially limited to one model and select highways, Super Cruise is now available on multiple GM models with plans to expand its coverage to 750,000 miles of roads in the U.S. and Canada by 2025, including rural and minor highways.

While GM has not specified a timeline for the rollout of their Level 3 system to customers, they are aggressively pursuing this advancement. Strategic hires, such as Vice President of ADAS Anantha Kancherla, who brings tech expertise from companies like Meta and Microsoft, will play a key role in expanding Super Cruise’s capabilities.

GM’s drive to advance Super Cruise into Level 3 reflects its ambition to lead in the autonomous vehicle market. With a focus on software expertise and driver assistance systems, GM is poised to revolutionize hands-off, eyes-off driving while prioritizing safety for its customers.
