India is emerging as one of the world’s leading adopters of generative AI, ranking among the top three markets globally alongside the United States and Germany, according to a global research report by Omdia. The study surveyed 2,050 business and technology leaders across 10 countries who influence their organisations’ current and future AI purchases.

The findings show that Indian organisations are adopting AI at scale and reporting stronger returns and operational improvements than the global average. According to the report, 71% of Indian respondents said they have seen measurable returns from generative AI investments, compared with the global average of 61%. In addition, 42% of Indian organisations are already using generative AI across multiple use cases.

The research also shows that Indian organisations are deploying generative AI across a broad set of technology and business functions, with adoption levels exceeding global averages in several areas. In IT operations, adoption stands at 76% in India compared with 61% globally. In data analytics, it is 75% versus 57%. In cybersecurity, it is 69% against 52%, while in software development it is 65% compared with 48%. Customer service adoption stands at 58% in India versus 48% globally, and in sales it is 41% compared with 31%.

The report also highlights the role of generative AI in India’s technology ecosystem, particularly in IT services and software development. Indian organisations report higher-than-global usage of AI tools across engineering and IT functions. Around 77% use AI to generate code, compared with 64% globally, while 76% use it for code reviews and debugging, against 65% globally. Some 66% use AI for IT or cybersecurity incident response, compared with 54% globally, and 68% use it to configure and optimise infrastructure, versus 58% globally.

These capabilities are helping organisations accelerate development cycles, improve system reliability, and automate routine engineering tasks. Indian organisations are also reporting stronger business outcomes from generative AI initiatives than the global average. According to the findings, 94% report improved operational efficiency, compared with 87% globally. About 92% report increased innovation, versus 83% globally, while 86% report improved financial performance, compared with 75% globally.

The report suggests that Indian enterprises are not only adopting generative AI rapidly, but are also translating that adoption into measurable business outcomes. Looking ahead, Indian organisations are expected to remain among the most aggressive investors in generative AI. The study finds that enterprises in India plan to allocate 28% of their technology budgets to generative AI over the next 12 months, compared with the global average of 22%.

Adoption of agentic AI is also gaining momentum. Around 66% of Indian organisations are either already using or planning to implement agentic AI within the next year, compared with 56% globally.
