Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh) [India], October 1 (ANI): On the occasion of Maha Navami, the ninth day of Sharadiya Navratri, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath performed traditional Kanya Pujan at the Gorkhnath Temple in Gorakhpur on Wednesday.

During the ceremony, CM Adityanath honored young girls, who are considered to embody the divine feminine, by applying tilak (vermilion) on their foreheads, draping them with flower garlands, and offering a chunri (traditional scarf). He also washed the girls’ feet and presented them with gifts.

In his address, the Chief Minister emphasized the significance of Matru Shakti (Mother Power) and Nari Shakti (Women Power) in fostering new inspiration. “On the ninth day of Shardiya Navratri, with the puja of Maa Bhagwati today, kanya pujan was done here. As per the tradition of Sanatan Dharma of Bharat, this festival of Matru Shakti and Nari Shakti instills new inspiration. On this occasion, I extend greetings to everyone,” he stated.

Navratri, which translates to “nine nights” in Sanskrit, is a Hindu festival that celebrates Goddess Durga and her nine avatars collectively known as Navdurga. Durga Puja, also referred to as Durgotsava or Sharodotsava, is an annual celebration honoring the goddess and commemorating her victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasur. It is believed that during this time, the goddess visits her earthly abode to bless her devotees.

In 2025, the Durga Puja festivities will commence on September 28 (Shashthi) and conclude on October 2 (Vijayadashami). While Hindus observe four Navratris throughout the year, Chaitra Navratri and Shardiya Navratri are the most widely celebrated, coinciding with the changing of seasons. In India, Navratri is marked by various forms and traditions.
