The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged China to provide information on the origins of COVID-19, which emerged five years ago. The deadly virus has claimed millions of lives, devastated economies, and strained healthcare systems worldwide.

The WHO stressed the importance of transparency and cooperation among countries to understand and prevent future epidemics. Without access to data and collaboration, the world remains vulnerable to similar health crises.

The WHO reflected on the initial reports of a mysterious pneumonia in Wuhan in late 2019, which eventually led to the global pandemic. As we commemorate this significant milestone, it is essential to remember those affected by COVID-19, acknowledge healthcare workers’ sacrifices, and commit to building a healthier future.

While China claims to have shared information on the coronavirus, the WHO continues to press for more transparency. The data shared by Chinese scientists in 2023 highlighted the presence of viral DNA from various animal species, suggesting potential animal transmission to humans.

Despite efforts to understand the virus’s origins, uncertainties remain, with ongoing debates over the need for further investigations. The WHO has emphasized the need to learn from the pandemic’s lessons and strengthen global preparedness for future health threats.

Looking ahead, countries are working on an accord for pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response. However, challenges persist in reaching consensus, especially concerning the involvement of pharmaceutical industries and equitable access to resources during future crises.
