Uttarakhand’s Uniform Civil Code: Transforming Marriage, Divorce, Succession, Polygamy, and Halala

Uttarakhand is set to implement the Uniform Civil Code today, January 27, 2025, marking it as the first state in independent India to adopt this legislation, despite facing resistance from various political factions and religious groups.

All arrangements have been finalized for the UCC’s rollout, which includes securing approval of the implementation rules and training officials, stated Chief Minister Dhami.

“The UCC is merely a contribution from our state in the grand ‘yagya’ being conducted by the Prime Minister to transform the nation into a developed, organized, harmonious, and self-sufficient society,” Dhami was quoted by PTI.

Implementing the law was a significant promise made by the BJP during the 2022 assembly elections, which resulted in the party winning a second consecutive term. Since its formation in 2000, no other political entity in the state has managed to hold power.

Dhami even credited the historic electoral success to the party’s pledge to enact the UCC.

Congress Calls Uttarakhand UCC a Preliminary Initiative

In response to inquiries about the UCC’s implementation in Uttarakhand, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi told PTI, “This is merely an effort to expedite the process, to initiate a pilot project, before imposing it… as there is no consensus. Thus, it resembles the beginning of a pilot project.”

Several states, including Assam, have indicated their interest in adopting Uttarakhand’s UCC as a model.
