At least 31 people died and several others were injured after a stampede occurred during a campaign rally for the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) party led by actor-turned-politician Vijay in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on Saturday. The rally, which drew a significant crowd, was delayed by six hours, leading to a tense atmosphere as supporters eagerly awaited the leader’s address.

During the event, Vijay paused his speech when several party workers fainted amidst the large gathering, prompting two ambulances to rush the affected individuals to nearby hospitals. As crowd tension escalated, Vijay attempted to alleviate the situation by distributing water bottles to supporters. Reports indicate he requested police assistance after a child went missing within the crowd.

The tragic incident resulted in the confirmed deaths of at least 31 individuals, including three children. In response, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin directed the district collector of Karur to swiftly provide medical support, coordinating with neighboring districts as necessary. Additionally, the state’s Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Davidson Devasirvatham, has been dispatched to the scene. The Chief Minister further ordered health and education ministers to travel to Karur promptly.

All available physicians at the Karur Government Hospital were called in to assist at the Accident and Emergency Care Initiative ward, reflecting the urgency of the medical response. The official casualty numbers and assessment of damages remain pending as authorities continue to evaluate the situation.

The Union Home Ministry has requested a detailed report from the Tamil Nadu government regarding the stampede. In the wake of this tragedy, Chief Minister Stalin announced an ex gratia payment of ₹10 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives during the rally.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his condolences, stating, “The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured.”

President Droupadi Murmu also conveyed her sorrow over the loss of life, offering condolences to the bereaved families while praying for the injured’s recovery. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami voiced his shock and extended condolences, instructing former minister M. R. Vijayabhaskar to visit the hospital to provide support to the injured.

In a post on social media, he described the incident as “both shocking and distressing,” emphasizing the unfortunate toll of the stampede during the campaign meeting.
