Trump Urges Israel to Halt Gaza Bombing, Claims Hamas Open to Lasting Peace

Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently addressed Hamas’s reaction to his proposal for Gaza through a post on Truth Social, suggesting that the Palestinian group is open to a “lasting peace.” He urged Israel to “immediately stop the bombing of Gaza,” emphasizing the need to safely and swiftly secure the release of hostages.

Trump’s statement read: “Based on the Statement just issued by Hamas, I believe they are ready for a lasting PEACE. Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the Hostages out safely and quickly! Right now, it’s far too dangerous to do that. We are already in discussions on details to be worked out. This is not about Gaza alone, this is about long sought PEACE in the Middle East.”

In response to Trump’s proposal, Hamas expressed its willingness to release all “Israeli” captives, whether alive or deceased, contingent on securing appropriate conditions for an exchange, as outlined in Trump’s plan. Hamas stated, “In this regard, the Movement affirms its readiness to immediately enter into negotiations through the mediators to discuss the details thereof.”

Following the announcement, Israel intensified its military operations in northern Gaza, conducting airstrikes in the Al-Sabra neighborhood and targeting areas near humanitarian facilities. These actions resulted in significant damage, including the destruction of armored vehicles and the ignition of fires in the region.

On the same day, UN experts expressed cautious optimism about the potential for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. However, they stressed that any peace initiative must protect Palestinian human rights and avoid creating conditions for further oppression. “We welcome parts of the peace plan announced by the United States to end the war in Gaza, including a permanent ceasefire, rapid release of unlawfully detained persons, an influx of humanitarian aid under United Nations supervision, no forced displacement from Gaza, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and the non-annexation of territory,” the experts stated.

In its official response to Trump’s plan, Hamas emphasized its commitment to halting aggression against Gaza and expressed its appreciation for international efforts. The group indicated its approval of an immediate ceasefire, prisoner exchange, and humanitarian aid, while rejecting the occupation and the displacement of Palestinians.

Hamas reiterates its approval to transfer the administration of the Gaza Strip to a coalition of independent Palestinians, based on national consensus and supported by Arab and Islamic allies. Regarding other issues raised in Trump’s proposal about Gaza’s future and Palestinian rights, Hamas indicated that these would need to be addressed through a comprehensive national dialogue involving a wide array of Palestinian factions.

The developments come at a time of heightened tensions in the region, as both sides navigate the complexities of their long-standing conflict.
