NEW DELHI: The family of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sandeep, who passed away in Rohtak, Haryana, has declined to surrender his body to the police and transported it to their hometown of Ladhot, according to reports by news agency ANI.

In a video recorded prior to his death, Sandeep expressed support for former Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarnia, who was transferred following a series of events linked to the suicide of Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar. Sandeep described Bijarnia as an honest officer in the video.

The incident occurred shortly after opposition leader Rahul Gandhi met with the wife and daughters of senior officer Puran Kumar, who reportedly took his own life at his government residence in Chandigarh last Tuesday. In a note found at the scene, Kumar named 16 senior IAS and IPS officers, accusing them of harassment and holding them responsible for his decision.

After receiving information about Kumar’s death, police cordoned off the area, recovered a weapon, and deployed forensic teams for investigation. Following the incident, the Haryana government put the state’s Director General of Police on leave and reassigned Rohtak’s Superintendent of Police Modi Narendra Bijarnia.

The Haryana Police have amended the FIR in Kumar’s suicide case to include relevant provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act at the request of Kumar’s wife, Senior IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar. In her letter to authorities, she sought the inclusion of Section 3(2)(v) of the Act, noting that earlier provisions seemed inadequate.

Chandigarh IG Pushpendra Kumar, who leads a six-member Special Investigation Team probing the case, confirmed on Sunday that the FIR has been updated with the relevant section.

In his video, ASI Sandeep alleged corruption within the police department, asserting, “One corrupt police officer in Sadar police station took money. A ₹50 crore deal was made to get Rao Inderjeet removed. On the other hand, there was one honest police officer — Narendra Bijarnia — who stood up to this corruption.”

Sandeep continued, alleging manipulations of posting quotas and deliberate errors in files, asserting his commitment to revealing the truth. He claimed that the systemic corruption made governance ineffective and highlighted the consequences of fear driven by such corruption, stating it contributed to Kumar’s death.

“Today, I am revealing the truth: the roots of their corruption run very deep. Complaints had been filed against this corruption. Out of fear of this very corruption, this suicide happened,” he said, suggesting that Kumar’s suicide was a reaction to the untenable pressures of corruption and political harm.

Sandeep emphasized his intention to advocate for honesty and transparency in the police system, declaring, “I am speaking out for the people of this country. I feel I must stand with honesty. I am honest.”

He concluded his remarks with a commitment to the truth, asserting that those responsible for wrongdoing would face consequences, before sending a somber farewell, expressing his desire to continue the fight for justice even in another life.
