Thailand and Cambodia have reached an agreement for an immediate ceasefire, a significant step toward reducing tensions after recent border clashes. This agreement was confirmed through a joint statement signed by the defense ministers of both nations on Saturday, with the ceasefire taking effect at noon local time on the day it was signed.
In the joint statement, both sides committed to halt all military hostilities and refrain from actions that could exacerbate the situation. The ceasefire aims to allow civilians displaced by the conflict to return to their homes as soon as it is secure for them to do so.
Thousands of residents had previously fled border areas due to shelling and armed confrontations. To support stability, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to enhance cooperation on demining efforts to mitigate the dangers posed by unexploded ordnance and landmines in impacted regions.
Moreover, the statement noted that Thailand will repatriate 18 Cambodian soldiers currently in detention once the ceasefire remains in effect for at least 72 hours. These soldiers were detained during earlier hostilities, and their return is anticipated to alleviate diplomatic tensions.
Both countries have also pledged to bolster the role of the ASEAN Observer Team, assigning it the responsibility of monitoring the ceasefire’s implementation and ensuring compliance from both parties. The involvement of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is deemed crucial for maintaining transparency and stability within the disputed border area.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed support for the ceasefire, emphasizing that the decision reflects a mutual understanding of the need for restraint, particularly for the sake of civilians. He highlighted that the Joint Statement outlines practical and positive measures, including verification by the ASEAN Observer Team and direct communication between defense authorities.
The ceasefire agreement signifies a critical effort in diplomatic relations between Thailand and Cambodia, aimed at fostering peace and stability in the region.
