Tesla India Begins Model Y Deliveries in Two Months After Launch

New Delhi – Tesla India commenced deliveries of the Model Y on Monday, just two months following its introduction in July. The American electric vehicle manufacturer characterized this swift rollout as a crucial advancement for electric vehicle ownership and sustainable development in India. As part of the delivery package, new owners will receive a complimentary wall connector to facilitate easy home charging installation.

The reimagined Model Y, which has been recognized as the world’s best-selling electric vehicle in both 2023 and 2024, is offered in two configurations: the rear-wheel drive (RWD) and the long-range rear-wheel drive (LR RWD). These trims provide respective ranges of 500 km and 622 km according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP). Tesla also indicated that deliveries for the Long Range Model Y will commence shortly.

The company has expanded its footprint in India, inaugurating its first experience center in Mumbai in July, followed by a second center in Aerocity, Delhi, in August.

Investigation Launched into Tesla Model Y Doors

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a preliminary investigation into potential defects related to the doors of the 2021 Tesla Model Y. This inquiry was initiated following nine reports alleging failures of electronic door handles, which potentially resulted from low battery voltage and, in some cases, trapped children inside the vehicle. Parents reported needing to break windows to release their children.

Although Tesla, under CEO Elon Musk’s leadership, has integrated internal manual door releases, the NHTSA raised concerns that small children may not be able to access or operate this mechanism. Notably, four incidents involved parents having to smash windows to extricate their children.

This investigation concerning Tesla’s best-selling model comes on the heels of multiple prior reports detailing similar door-opening malfunctions, including situations where power loss after accidents rendered drivers unable to leave their vehicles.
