Tesla has officially delivered its first Model Y to Maharashtra’s Transport Minister, Pratap Sarnaik, marking a significant milestone in the American automaker’s entry into the Indian market. This delivery took place shortly after Tesla opened its first showroom in Mumbai on July 15, 2025, at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Starting at a price of ₹67.8 lakh, the Model Y is anticipated to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) across the country.
Minister Sarnaik received his white Model Y from the Tesla Experience Centre at BKC, expressing his intention to gift the vehicle to his grandson to foster awareness of green mobility among younger generations. “I have taken delivery of the Tesla to spread awareness about electric mobility among citizens, especially the younger generation. Even if the cost is slightly higher today, what matters is setting the right example and accelerating EV adoption,” Sarnaik stated.
Tesla’s official entry into India began with the opening of its retail store, attended by notable figures including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The Model Y, a long-range, rear-wheel-drive version, is part of Tesla’s strategic push to enhance EV adoption in India, posing competitive pressure on existing electric vehicle manufacturers.
The Model Y was first unveiled globally in 2019 and has now arrived in India in 2025. It is positioned between Tesla’s Model 3 sedan and the larger Model X SUV, primarily configured as a standard 5-seater, with an optional 7-seater variant available in select markets. Built on the same platform as the Model 3, it offers enhanced space and versatility. Key features include advanced autopilot capabilities, multiple safety cameras, and a crash-resistant design, earning it a reputation as one of the safest SUVs available.
Industry experts regard Tesla’s entry as a pivotal development for the Indian EV market, which is expected to significantly boost electric vehicle adoption in the region.
