A controversy has emerged in Madhubani district, Bihar, following a purification ritual performed by priests at the Kapileshwar Nath Mahadev Mandir after a visit by Prashant Kishor, founder of the Jan Suraaj Party (JSP), and his party’s Muslim candidate, Parvez Alam.

The incident took place late on Tuesday when Kishor and Alam visited the temple’s garbh grih (sanctum sanctorum) to offer prayers to Lord Shiva and other deities. After their departure, the temple priests conducted a cleansing using panchgavya, a traditional mixture of milk, curd, ghee, cow urine, and cow dung, along with Gangajal, citing the need for ritual purification.

Priest Shrawan Kumar stated he had been informed about Kishor’s visit and had prepared the necessary prayer materials. “I consented and prepared everything, but Kishor did not arrive until around 7:30 p.m.,” he explained. “The temple usually closes to visitors after 8 p.m. He came along with his party’s candidate and performed the puja.”

Kumar mentioned that he was unaware of Alam’s Muslim background until after the prayers, as the candidate was attired in traditional Mithila dress. He further commented that if Kishor aims to promote unity, he should also consider performing Rudra Abhishek in a mosque.

Following the visit, some local residents expressed objections to a Muslim entering the sanctum, leading the priests to carry out the purification ritual. Parvez Alam is contesting from the Benipatti assembly constituency as the JSP candidate in the upcoming elections.
