The Supreme Court has reprimanded the Station House Officer (SHO) of Kandhai Police Station, Gulaab Singh Sonkar, for violating its orders by arresting and assaulting a petitioner. This incident occurred despite a clear judicial directive that was issued on March 28, 2025, to provide protection to the petitioner, according to a report by Live Law.
A bench composed of Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria reviewed a contempt petition that detailed how, on April 23, 2025, the petitioner was forcibly taken from his workplace and assaulted by the SHO. The petitioner reportedly provided a copy of the Supreme Court’s order during this confrontation, but the SHO responded with insults in Hindi and refused to acknowledge the Court’s authority, thereby displaying an overt disregard for judicial mandates.
In response to the incident, the Supreme Court had previously instructed the Uttar Pradesh Home Department to initiate an inquiry, led by an officer not below the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP). The inquiry report confirmed allegations of willful disobedience to the Court’s order.
Expressing strong discontent, the bench asserted that officers like the SHO should not be permitted to “pollute the stream of justice under the guise of a police uniform.” The Court noted ample prima facie evidence of intentional defiance that warrants stringent action.
While the bench showed a readiness to order firm penalties against the SHO, it acknowledged the assurance from the Government’s legal representative that prompt actions would be taken based on the inquiry’s findings. Accordingly, the Court decided to grant the State time to report on further developments and scheduled a follow-up hearing for November 7, 2025.
At this stage, the Assistant Advocate General, representing the Department of Home & Confidential of the Uttar Pradesh Government, indicated that the State would act swiftly and report back to the Court by the next hearing date. The bench’s order reflects this arrangement, noting the request for rescheduling to allow for timely updates.
