India’s credit card spending increased by 13.7% year-on-year to ₹1.91 lakh crore in August 2025, driven by a rise in consumer demand, as reported today. HDFC Bank led in transactions with ₹53,873 crore, marking a significant 24% growth from the previous year.

Key Market Highlights: H2 FY26 Auction and Treasury Bills Calendar

  1. Total Borrowing Target: The Indian government aims to borrow ₹6.77 lakh crore in H2 FY26 through dated securities, contributing to an overall fiscal year target of approximately ₹14.82 lakh crore in gross borrowings.

  2. Sovereign Green Bonds (SGrBs): Of the ₹6.77 lakh crore, ₹10,000 crore will be raised via Sovereign Green Bonds, specifically in the 30-year segment.

  3. Auction Frequency & Timeline: The borrowing will occur through 22 weekly auctions with an average weekly issue rate of ₹30,000 crore scheduled until March 6, 2026, across securities of varying maturities from 3 to 50 years.

  4. Maturity Mix / Tenure Share: The distribution of borrowing across maturity buckets is as follows:

    • 3-year: 6.6%
    • 5-year: 13.3%
    • 7-year: 8.1%
    • 10-year: 28.4%
    • 15-year: 14.2%
    • 30-year: 9.2%
    • 40-year: 11.1%
    • 50-year: 9.2%

Additionally, the government may use a greenshoe option to accept additional bids of up to ₹2,000 crore for each auction security, alongside ongoing switching and buybacks to manage redemption profiles.

  5. Treasury Bills & Short-term Borrowing in Q3: The estimated weekly issuance of Treasury Bills in Q3 FY26 is ₹19,000 crore, divided as follows:

    • 91-day T-Bills: ₹7,000 crore
    • 182-day T-Bills: ₹6,000 crore
    • 364-day T-Bills: ₹6,000 crore

To accommodate short-term mismatches, the Ways & Means Advances (WMA) limit is set at ₹50,000 crore for H2 FY26.

  6. Market Risks & Considerations: Analysts have noted a potential decline in demand for long maturities (40- and 50-year), prompting the government to consider a tilt towards shorter maturities as necessary. It is anticipated that the government will maintain its fiscal deficit target of 4.4% of GDP for FY26.

Market Snapshot: Indian equity indices closed in the negative zone last week, largely due to revised costs for H-1B visas and increased tariffs on pharmaceuticals contributing to cautious market sentiment. The Nifty 50 Index ended the week down by 2.65%, while the Nifty Bank Index lost 1.93%.

Fund Flow Activity: Foreign Institutional Investors divested shares worth ₹19,530 crore, whereas Domestic Institutional Investors purchased shares valued at ₹17,411.4 crore in the cash segment.

Macro Data: Looking ahead, market participants will focus on U.S. non-farm employment data, European CPI inflation estimates, remarks from the Bank of Japan Governor, and manufacturing data from key economies in the upcoming week.

Stock Updates: The IPO for Ganesh Consumer Products Limited listed today, with a face value of ₹10 and an issue price of ₹322 per share. Atlanta Electricals Limited also debuted with a face value of ₹2 and an issue price of ₹754 per share.

Economic Calendar: Taiwan is on a market holiday. Key data points for today include:

  • 16:00: India Industrial Production (expected: 2.9% vs. previous: 3.5%)
  • 19:30: U.S. Pending Home Sales m/m (expected: 0.2% vs. previous: -0.4%)
  • 23:00: U.S. FOMC Members Musalem and Williams will speak.

Investors confirm that despite challenging market conditions, mid- and small-cap mutual funds are performing strongly. Analyses indicate potential outperformance in specific sectors, including BSE Capital Goods, BSE PSU, and BSE India Manufacturing, amidst struggling benchmark indices.

As of September 29, 2025, market sentiment continues to reflect a cautious approach, with various economic indicators and IPO activities directly affecting trading strategies and expectations.
