Sensex Plummets 440 Points, Nifty Dips to 26,000; Media and Financials Falter

Equity benchmarks dragged on Tuesday as investors locked in gains following the market’s recent record run in the previous trading session, with media and financial stocks leading the fall.

Sentiment weakened further amid soft foreign inflows and pressure on the rupee, while higher crude prices and broader global uncertainties added to the cautious mood.

Sensex fell 447 points from the previous close of 85,641.90, and Nifty 50 depreciated 135 points to the intraday lof of 26,040.75 against the previous close of 26,175.75.

At 12.34 pm, Sensex traded 342.33 points or 0.40 per cent lower at 85,299.57 and Nifty 50 was down by 103.45 points or 0.40 per cent to 26,072.30

Midcap index dipped by 0.15 per cent and smallcap index dropped by 0.53 per cent at the time of writing.

A majority of the sectoral indices, led by media, chemicals, private bank, metal and realty, traded in the negative territory. PSU Bank and IT managed to trade with modest gains

Top gainers & losers intraday

Shares of Asian Paints, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, NTPC, Jio Financial and Maruti led the gainers of Nifty 50, while Interglobe Aviation, Bharat Electronics, HDFC Life, ICICI Bank, Eternal and HDFC Bank emerged as major laggards.

Market breadth remained weak, with 3,058 stocks traded on the National Stock Exchange, of which only 1,004 advanced while 1,953 declined and 101 were unchanged.

AU Small Finance, Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda, PNB, Paytm, TMCV, Hero Motocorp and GMR Airports were among 40 stocks hit a 52-week high compared with 152 (including Crompton and Colgate) that slipped to a 52-week low, underscoring the bearish undertone. Meanwhile, 56 stocks were locked in the upper circuit and 63 in the lower circuit.

Midcap and smallcap movers

Under the midcap segment, Union Bank, Vofadone Idea, Ashok Leyland, SBI Cards and Glenmark soared 2-3 per cent, while Indian Bank, Coromandel, Gofrey Phillips, Nykaa and 360 One WAM declined by 2 per cent.

Smallcap stocks Natco Pharma, Wockhardt, Gland Pharma, Angel One and Whirlpool gained 1.5-3 per cent. Garden Reach, GE Ship, Manappuram and Zensar Tech declined 2-4 per cent.
