Reliance Jio Launches 5G Service in the Challenging Terrain of Siachen Glacier

Soldiers stationed at the Siachen Glacier now have access to 4G and 5G network connectivity, thanks to a partnership between Reliance Jio and the Indian Army. Collaborating closely with Army Signallers, Jio has installed plug-and-play pre-configured equipment at a forward post, just in time for Army Day on January 15. This initiative enhances Jio’s network reach in the Ladakh region, reaching even the world’s highest battlefield.

According to a press release issued by Jio on January 13, this significant milestone was achieved through careful coordination with Army Signallers, which included detailed planning, multiple training sessions, pre-configuration of systems, and extensive testing. The Indian Army played a crucial role in logistics, overseeing the airlift of Jio’s equipment to the Siachen Glacier, a location with elevations of 16,000 feet in the Karakoram range, where extreme conditions can see temperatures drop to -50°C.

Earlier, on January 2, the Indian Army announced plans to connect border areas and remote villages in Ladakh using 4G technology in partnership with Bharti Airtel. The Fire and Fury Corps collaborated with the telecom company to establish 42 mobile towers, enhancing connectivity across regions such as Kargil, Siachen, Demchok, Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO), and Galwan.
