Former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has praised South Africa A for their exceptional performance in chasing down a formidable 417-run target against a strong Indian A team during the second unofficial Test at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. This match marks a significant preparation ahead of the official Test series between India and South Africa, which is set to begin on November 14.
In a post on his X account, Ashwin commented, “South Africa A, led by Jordan Hermann, are throwing in some punches on Day 4 of the unofficial Test, chasing 417. He is batting on 90 against Siraj, Prasidh, Kuldeep, and Akash Deep. Whatever happens today, Jordan Hermann has made rapid strides in South African cricket circles. He plays for SR Eastern Cape in the SA 20.”
South Africa A successfully completed the chase with three overs to spare, despite facing a bowling attack that included notable Indian bowlers such as Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Akash Deep. They entered the final day needing 392 runs, a challenging task with a demanding run rate, yet they managed to maintain their momentum throughout the innings.
Openers Jordan Hermann and Lesego Senokwane set a solid foundation with a partnership of 156 runs in just 43 overs before Hermann was dismissed by Prasidh. While Senokwane played a stabilizing role, Hermann displayed aggressive intent, scoring at a strike rate of 73.98.
Following Hermann’s departure, South Africa A continued to score freely. Zubayr Hamza contributed significantly with an energetic 77 runs off 88 balls, hitting nine fours and three sixes. Test captain Temba Bavuma scored a cautious 59 from 101 balls. After Bavuma was removed, South Africa A found themselves needing 65 runs with just five wickets in hand and 11.4 overs remaining. However, the partnership between Esterhuizen and van Vuuren ensured that the visiting team maintained control and secured victory with three overs to spare.
