Rachin Ravindra Shatters Shikhar Dhawan’s Record in ICC ODI History

In a stunning display of batting prowess, New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra has cemented his name in cricket history by breaking a long-standing record held by former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan. During the Champions Trophy semifinal against South Africa, held on March 5, 2025, Ravindra scored an impressive century, marking his fifth in ICC One Day International (ODI) events. This remarkable feat makes him the player with the fewest innings required to reach five centuries in ICC ODI competitions, accomplishing this in just 13 innings.

A Historic Knock in the Semifinal

Ravindra’s innings was nothing short of a masterclass, as he crafted 108 runs from 101 balls, featuring 13 boundaries and a six. His contributions were pivotal in pushing New Zealand to a staggering total of 362/6, the highest first-innings score in Champions Trophy history. This explosive performance laid the groundwork for New Zealand’s eventual victory, as they secured a 50-run win despite a valiant century from South Africa’s David Miller, who scored 100 runs.

Rachin’s partnership with captain Kane Williamson, who scored 102 runs, further demonstrated New Zealand’s commanding presence in the match. With these stellar performances, the Kiwis not only advanced to the final but also showcased their batting depth and strategic gameplay.

Record-Breaking Achievements

Previously, Dhawan held the record for the fastest five centuries in ICC ODI tournaments, achieved over 15 innings. Known for his aggressive approach, Dhawan garnered significant runs in ICC events, amassing 701 runs in 10 Champions Trophy matches across two editions (2013 and 2017) with an average of 77.88, including three centuries and three fifties. His form in ODI World Cups was equally impressive, notching up 537 runs in 10 innings, with three centuries and a half-century.

Ravindra’s record reflects not only his individual talent but also a new generation of cricketers pushing the boundaries of achievement. With his two centuries in the ongoing Champions Trophy and three in the 2023 ODI World Cup, Ravindra’s batting average and strike rate have caught the attention of cricket enthusiasts and analysts alike.

The Road Ahead

As New Zealand heads into the final with a robust performance on their side, Rachin Ravindra’s contributions will undoubtedly be crucial. His ability to anchor the innings while also finding boundaries creates a well-rounded batting strategy that many teams aspire to emulate. The match against South Africa also highlighted the bowling capabilities of Mitchell Santner, who contributed significantly with the ball, taking 3 wickets for 43 runs. Such balanced performances showcase the depth in New Zealand’s lineup.

Conclusion

Rachin Ravindra’s record-breaking innings is a testament to the evolving landscape of cricket, where young talent is increasingly breaking established norms. As fans await the Champions Trophy final, all eyes will be on Ravindra and the rest of the New Zealand team to see if they can carry their momentum to victory. With the tournament showcasing some of the best young talents in cricket today, including Ravindra and other promising players, the future of the game looks incredibly bright.

As history unfolds, it will be interesting to see how Rachin Ravindra’s career progresses and whether he can continue to add to his record tally in future tournaments. His remarkable journey thus far sets the stage for a spectacular cricketing legacy.
