A woman was shot and killed by a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis, prompting widespread protests, school closures, and calls for resistance against immigration enforcement.
Renee Nicole Macklin Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was shot in the head while sitting in her SUV in a residential area south of downtown Minneapolis, in front of a family member. Witnesses reported seeing the SUV reverse briefly before ICE agents fired at the driver. Good later succumbed to her injuries at Hennepin County Medical Center.
Following the incident, her SUV was left with a bullet hole in the windshield and visible blood inside. Local resident Emily Heller recounted hearing ICE agents shout at the driver to “Get out of here.” She stated that the officer drew his firearm and shot Good multiple times while positioned at the hood of her car.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) characterized the shooting as an act of self-defense, alleging that the driver had “weaponized her vehicle.” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey rejected this narrative, labeling it “bullshit” and ordering ICE agents to leave the city. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz pledged a thorough investigation amid an alert for the National Guard.
US President Donald Trump supported the ICE officer, claiming the driver had “violently” attempted to run over the agent and attributing blame to what he referred to as the “Radical Left.” Vice President J.D. Vance also expressed support for the ICE officers, describing the administration’s backing for them.
Protests erupted at the shooting site shortly thereafter, with demonstrators chanting “Shame! Shame! Shame” and “ICE out of Minnesota.” Federal agents responded with gas masks and fired chemical rounds to disperse the crowds. In a news conference, Mayor Frey insisted that the self-defense argument was unfounded based on his review of the video evidence.
Governor Walz also condemned the shooting, calling it “totally predictable” and “totally avoidable,” urging protestors to remain peaceful. He countered the DHS’s assertions, stating, “Don’t believe this propaganda machine,” emphasizing that the state would pursue a just investigation.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has initiated an inquiry into the shooting. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin claimed that Good’s vehicle posed a threat to the agents during the encounter. Representative Robin Kelly announced intentions to impeach DHS Secretary Kristi Noem for labeling the incident “an act of domestic terrorism.”
Representative Ilhan Omar expressed outrage over ICE’s actions, which she stated led to the death of a legal observer in Minneapolis. She refuted the claims of any attempt to harm agents and called for ICE to exit the city.
Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett attributed the incident to “racist rhetoric” from Trump and his supporters. Amnesty International condemned the shooting, linking it to the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration policies and calling for accountability for deaths related to ICE enforcement.
Reports indicate that Renée Macklin was an accomplished poet and writer, having won the 2020 Academy of American Poets University & College Poetry Prize at Old Dominion University. Her literary contributions included publications in notable journals and co-hosting a podcast with her husband, comedian Tim Macklin.
Immigration raids under the Trump administration have resulted in thousands of arrests and heightened tensions in cities like Minneapolis, which has a significant Somali American community. The administration has disparaged this community, with Trump previously making incendiary remarks about Somali residents.
The Trump administration’s deportation policy has intensified, with a budget of $75 billion allocated for ICE operations over four years, making it one of the best-funded law enforcement agencies in the U.S. Since the beginning of Trump’s second term, at least 28 incidents involving the discharging of firearms have been recorded during immigration enforcement actions.
