Protesters worldwide have gathered to voice their outrage over ongoing violence against women and to advocate for increased public efforts to combat this issue. November 25 marked the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, a global initiative aimed at raising awareness of all forms of abuse directed at women and girls. According to a report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and UN Women, approximately 50,000 women and girls were murdered by intimate partners or family members in the previous year, representing 60 percent of all female homicide victims globally. This figure equates to 137 women killed each day, or one every 10 minutes, based on data from 117 countries. The report emphasizes that the home continues to be the most perilous environment for women and girls concerning the risk of homicide. Furthermore, the study notes that advancements in technology have not only intensified certain types of violence but have also given rise to new forms, such as nonconsensual image sharing, doxxing, and deepfake videos.
