A 19-year-old pregnant woman, identified as Manya, was reportedly murdered by her family in an alleged “honour killing” for marrying a Dalit man in Inam Veerapura village, Hubballi taluk, Karnataka. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, when Manya was six to seven months pregnant.

Manya suffered severe injuries during the attack and was rushed to a private hospital in Hubballi, where she succumbed to her injuries later that night. Her husband, Vivekananda, and his parents also sustained injuries in the assault; Vivekananda has been hospitalized at KIMS in Hubballi, while his mother and other relatives are receiving treatment for serious injuries.

According to police reports, Manya entered an inter-caste marriage with Vivekananda, a Dalit youth from the same village, in May. This marriage faced intense opposition from Manya’s family, which belongs to the Lingayat community. Due to threats from her relatives, the couple had been residing at a relative’s house in Haveri but returned to Inam Veerapura village on December 8.

Law enforcement stated that they had previously summoned Manya’s parents to warn them about interfering with the couple. A written assurance from her father, Prakashgouda Patil, was obtained, stating he would keep his distance from them. Nevertheless, reports indicate that Prakashgouda visited Vivekananda’s home several times this month.

On the night of the attack, Prakashgouda, along with his sons Irannagouda and Arunagouda, allegedly entered Vivekananda’s house under the pretext of visiting Manya. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the attackers used iron rods, pipes, and a pickaxe during the assault on Manya, her husband, and his family members.

Manya sustained critical head and body injuries and was later declared dead in the hospital. Her mother-in-law and other relatives also suffered significant injuries in the incident.

Hubballi Rural Police have arrested three individuals, including Manya’s father, in connection with the case. Two other relatives are reportedly at large. A case has been registered at the Hubballi Rural police station, and investigations are ongoing.

Dalit organizations in Hubballi and Dharwad have condemned the incident as an “honour murder.” They are reportedly planning protest demonstrations in Inam Veerapura village and Hubballi on Monday.
