Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the upcoming Mahakumbh, set to begin on January 13, as the ‘mahayagya of unity,’ while devotees view it as a unique spiritual experience. For the Uttar Pradesh government, the 45-day event, which is anticipated to attract 450 million attendees, represents a significant opportunity to promote the state on a global stage.

In preparation for this grand cultural event, the Prime Minister, accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, toured the Sangam site—the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythological Saraswati—a month before the festivities commence. Modi emphasized the event’s potential to elevate the cultural and spiritual identity of the nation.

Local authorities are diligently working to ensure Prayagraj, an ancient city, can accommodate the expected surge of visitors. A temporary city covering 4,000 hectares will be established at Sangam, featuring specially designed tents for pilgrims.

This initiative comes with a substantial investment of ₹5,500 crore for improving local infrastructure. More than 167 projects are currently underway to enhance facilities, ensuring visitors have a pleasant experience.

To facilitate the smooth movement of traffic and pedestrians, five dedicated pathways have been created, including the Akshayvat and Bharadwaj Ashram corridors. Moreover, all access roads to Prayagraj have been widened to handle increased vehicle flow, and the capacity of nine railway stations in the vicinity has been enhanced to allow for more train services and prevent overcrowding.

To address environmental concerns, four wastewater treatment plants have been installed to manage polluted water flowing into the Ganga. Additionally, 13 sewer treatment plants have been established to provide devotees with access to clean water for their holy baths, aligning with plans to make the Maha Kumbh both eco-friendly and memorable.

Recognizing the past cleanliness challenges associated with the Kumbh, the state plans to deploy a workforce of 10,000 dedicated to sanitation efforts, alongside the installation of 1.5 lakh toilets in the festival area.

After the successful Ardha-Kumbh in 2019, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath assured that the Maha Kumbh will be ‘Bhavya’ (Grand), ‘Divya’ (Divine), and also ‘digital.’ To enhance communication with devotees, the state government will introduce the “Sah’AI’yak Chatbot,” an AI-driven platform designed to assist participants effectively.
