Pragya Singh Thakur’s Controversial Call to Violence Fuels Outrage Over Anti-Muslim Rhetoric

Hindutva activist Pragya Singh Thakur has incited controversy with her remarks during a Durga Vahini Shastra Pujan in Bhopal on Sunday, advocating for Hindu women to avoid interactions with Muslim men and promoting a message of aggression against Muslims. Thakur, a former BJP MP from Bhopal who was acquitted in the 2008 Malegaon blast case that killed six Muslim men and injured over 100 in a Muslim-majority area, called for women to reject help from Muslim men for household tasks.

Her statement included the assertion, “When the enemy (Muslims) comes, they should be cut in half.” Thakur further emphasized her point, stating, “There is no brother-sister bond in Miyas [the derogatory term used for Muslims]. If they don’t respect their own sisters, how can they respect you as their sister? Don’t ever become sisters of Muslims.”

Thakur also urged women to take practical measures against Muslim men, suggesting they refrain from letting them into their homes for tasks such as light fitting, water-pipe repairs, or vehicle driving. She recommended that Hindu women avoid food from Muslim-owned shops near temples, suggesting community efforts to identify and act against such establishments, stating, “Once such Vidharmis selling prasad near our temples are caught, they should be thrashed and handed over to law enforcement.”

Additionally, she made critical comments about India’s first Prime Minister without naming him, labeling his leadership a mistake.

Thakur’s comments have drawn significant political backlash. Umang Singhar, Leader of the Opposition in Madhya Pradesh, condemned her statements as “objectionable” and accused the BJP of intentionally escalating anti-Muslim sentiments to distract from pressing issues like unemployment and inflation. He stated, “The BJP accuses others of playing Hindu-Muslim politics, but its own leaders make such provocative statements from public platforms. Pragya Thakur is a repeat offender.”

These remarks are part of a broader pattern of inflammatory rhetoric from Thakur, which often includes calls for violence against perceived “enemies” and accusations of “love jihad.” In previous statements, she has encouraged Hindus to keep weapons at home, referring to Muslims as “enemies.” Her controversial remarks have led to FIRs and widespread condemnation, viewed as exacerbating Islamophobic tensions within the community.
