Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted a saffron flag at the Ram temple in Ayodhya on Tuesday, signaling the completion of its construction at the site of the Babri Masjid, which was demolished by Hindutva groups in 1992. Modi was among the leaders present during the demolition.
“Today, the entire India and the whole world are imbued with Ram,” Modi stated during the ceremony. He added, “Centuries-old wounds are being healed, centuries of torture are finding respite, and a centuries-old resolve is achieving fulfillment today.” He emphasized the need to create an India inspired by “Ram Rajya,” or the ideal reign of Lord Ram.
The ceremony was attended by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The Babri Masjid was destroyed on December 6, 1992, by Hindu right-wing mobs claiming that an ancient Ram temple originally existed on that site.
In 2019, the Supreme Court directed that the site be allotted to a trust responsible for the construction of the Ram temple. Over four years following that ruling, the temple was inaugurated in a ceremony led by Modi on January 22, 2024.
CPI General Secretary D Raja remarked, “Despite the Supreme Court verdict stating that the demolition of the Babri Masjid was a criminal act, for which no one has been held accountable, PM Modi stands before the nation, raising a saffron flag in Ayodhya and claiming it as the symbol of ‘resurgence of Indian civilization.’”
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen leader Waris Pathan described December 6, 1992, as a “black day” for the country and democracy, stating that the demolition occurred “through a conspiracy.” He asserted, “We believe that the mosque will remain where it was… You are not the prime minister of a particular community; you are the prime minister of the entire country.”
Congress leader Rashid Alvi emphasized that according to the Constitution, India does not endorse any religion and questioned Modi’s motivations, asking, “Will he hoist a flag on a mosque, Gurudwara, or a church?” Alvi suggested that the Prime Minister’s actions were politically motivated in relation to upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections and aimed at provoking religious sentiments across the nation.
