Prime Minister Modi Inaugurates Major Development Projects in Assam

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a groundbreaking ₹5,000-crore bamboo-based ethanol plant located in Numaligarh, Golaghat district of Assam. He also laid the foundation for a ₹7,230-crore Petro Fluidised Catalytic Cracker Unit at the Numaligarh Refinery.

Dubbed the “world’s first, second-generation” bioethanol facility, this eco-friendly plant aims to utilize every part of the bamboo plant, establishing itself as a ‘zero-waste’ operation. According to officials, this initiative is expected to inject ₹200 crore into the rural economy of Assam, sourcing 500,000 tonnes of green bamboo from four northeastern states and directly benefiting over 50,000 individuals.

In addition to the ethanol plant, the newly announced polypropylene plant marks a significant step forward in plastic manufacturing, which offers a variety of applications. This facility is projected to generate 75,000 man-days of employment annually.

Earlier that same day, Modi laid the foundation stones for various health and infrastructure projects in Mangaldoi, valued at ₹6,300 crore. These include the construction of Darrang Medical College and Hospital, a nursing college, and a General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) school, collectively costing ₹570 crore.

Furthermore, Modi initiated the development of the 2.9 km Narengi-Kuruwa bridge, with an estimated expenditure of ₹1,200 crore, as well as a substantial 118.5 km long Guwahati Ring Road project, which aims to connect the districts of Kamrup and Darrang in Assam and Ri Bhoi in Meghalaya. The Ring Road project has a projected cost of ₹4,530 crore.

Modi arrived in Assam the previous evening, where he participated in celebrations marking the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna awardee Bhupen Hazarika.
