Philippines objects to China’s ‘monster ship’ in maritime territory

The recent deployment of China’s largest coastguard vessel in the Philippines’ exclusive maritime economic zone has raised concerns and tensions in the region. The Philippines has protested this aggressive move by China and demanded the withdrawal of the vessel from the area. Despite China’s claims of “lawful” activities, the Philippines and international observers see this as a clear violation of maritime laws.

The Philippines has also condemned the presence of Chinese maritime forces and militia in its territorial waters and EEZ, including coastguard ships and a naval helicopter. These actions by China have been deemed as escalatory and provocative, disregarding both Philippine and international laws.

Tensions between the Philippines and China have been escalating due to overlapping claims in the South China Sea, where an international tribunal ruled against China’s expansive claims in 2016. The strategic importance of the South China Sea as a major shipping route further underscores the significance of these territorial disputes.
