The death toll from the recent magnitude 6.9 earthquake in the central Philippines has risen to 72, as confirmed by officials. With search operations now complete and no individuals reported missing, authorities are focusing on assisting those injured and displaced. Rescue teams successfully retrieved additional bodies from a collapsed hotel in Bogo City, located near the earthquake’s epicenter. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced plans to establish a temporary “tent city” for residents of the 600 destroyed homes, addressing the fears of those reluctant to return to undamaged houses amidst continuing aftershocks. Approximately 20,000 evacuees currently lack proper shelter, with many sleeping outdoors. The government documented 294 injuries and estimates indicate that over 110,000 individuals across 42 communities will require aid for rebuilding and recovery. Marcos pledged to restore electricity to Bogo and provide financial assistance of 10,000 pesos ($171) to each family who lost their home. Despite challenges in healthcare services due to damage, officials confirmed the provincial hospital is now safe for returning patients. Located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” the Philippines is accustomed to frequent seismic activity.
