Outrage Erupts as Sikh Woman Raped in Racially Charged Attack in Oldbury

A Sikh woman was raped in a racially motivated attack early Tuesday morning near Tame Road in Oldbury, Birmingham, in the West Midlands of the UK. The victim, aged 20, was allegedly targeted by two white men who yelled at her, “You don’t belong here, get out.”

Law enforcement arrested a suspect within hours of the incident, following protests organized by the local Sikh community. Demonstrators gathered on the streets to express their outrage, while many others voiced their anger and grief on social media platforms.

In response to the attack, 40 organizations representing South Asian, Black, migrant, refugee, and anti-racist groups issued a joint statement expressing solidarity with the survivor. They praised her bravery for coming forward to report the brutal act of sexual and racial violence.

“We express our deepest solidarity with the survivor and pledge to stand by her unconditionally,” the statement read. Among the signatories were Sikh Women’s Aid, Black Lives Matter UK, Million Women Rise Movement, and the Indian Workers Association (GB), among others.

The survivor also released a public statement through the Sikh Federation (UK), in which she expressed her gratitude for the support shown by her community.

This incident coincided with a day of unrest in London, where thousands of far-right supporters participated in a march led by Tommy Robinson, known for his white supremacist ideologies. Demonstrators shouted Islamophobic, anti-immigrant, and racist slogans.

The organizations that signed the statement attributed such violent incidents to the dehumanizing rhetoric often propagated by far-right groups, which they allege contributes to a hostile environment for ethnic minorities, immigrants, and refugees.

“The far-right has exploited women’s and children’s safety to disseminate racist and Islamophobic myths, particularly concerning grooming gangs and the portrayal of migrants, refugees, and transgender individuals as sources of sexual abuse,” the group’s joint statement concluded.
