CHANDIGARH: In a significant step towards aiding flood rehabilitation efforts, a new warehouse facility has been established on Ajnala Road in Amritsar. This central hub for the storage and distribution of relief materials was inaugurated by Rajya Sabha MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney, who is also the president of the Sun Foundation and the World Punjabi Organisation. The facility was created by converting a resort.
The official opening of the warehouse was conducted by Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Sardar Kultar Singh Sandhwan, who highlighted the essential role of community involvement in the recovery process. He underscored that, in addition to government initiatives, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and social organizations play a crucial role in enhancing relief and rehabilitation efforts throughout Punjab.
The warehouse is equipped with critical flood relief supplies, including 50 tractors and 10 JCB machines for desilting operations, as well as 200 fogging machines aimed at disease prevention. It also contains provisions for food and shelter to aid thousands of affected individuals. The distribution of these supplies will be coordinated with the Amritsar District Administration, ensuring that assistance reaches those who are most in need.
Sahney emphasized the urgency of timely measures to safeguard Punjab, often referred to as the “wheat basket of India,” against severe threats that could compromise the national food supply chain.
