National Socialist Council of Nagaland Declared Unlawful: MHA’s Ban Begins September 28

The Ministry of Home Affairs has designated the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) and all its associated factions, wings, and front organizations as an unlawful association for a duration of five years. According to the ministry’s statement, the NSCN (K) has connections with other unlawful groups, including the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak, and People’s Liberation Army.

The NSCN (K) has been implicated in various criminal activities, such as kidnapping for ransom and extortion targeting businessmen, government officials, and civilians. It has been reported that the organization possesses illegal arms and ammunitions and has sought aid from anti-India elements abroad for the procurement of arms and other support. Recent recoveries related to the NSCN (K) include 69 firearms, 52 magazines, 931 live rounds, 10 grenades, 150 detonators, three explosive gel tubes, 200 grams of Trinitrotoluene (TNT), 1.5 kilograms of improvised explosive devices, and 800 grams of additional explosives.

In light of these concerns, the Central Government expressed its belief that actions taken by the NSCN (K) and its affiliated entities necessitate an unlawful designation. This declaration, effective immediately as of September 28, 2025, will remain in place for five years. The issuance of this notification is grounded in powers conferred by the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act of 1967, under which the Central Government has deemed it necessary to respond decisively to the unlawful activities previously and currently conducted by the NSCN (K).
