Kerala BJP state president and former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar stated on Tuesday that the absence of Muslim representation in the Union cabinet is a direct consequence of the Muslim community’s lack of electoral support for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
During a press conference in Kozhikode, Chandrasekhar emphasized that the BJP cannot be held responsible for the lack of Muslim ministers, attributing the situation to the community’s voting patterns. “Muslims are not voting for us. What can we do if the community is not supporting us? No ministers in the Union cabinet because there are no MPs from the community,” he remarked.
Currently, the BJP has no Muslim Members of Parliament in either House, resulting in no Muslim representation in the Union cabinet. Chandrasekhar expressed the need for introspection, questioning why Muslims choose to support the Congress party instead, asking, “Is there any benefit in giving your vote to Congress?”
He claimed that the lack of trust towards the BJP from the Muslim community is not due to any wrongdoing on the party’s part. “That trust has not been there. What is the reason for that? That is not what we did. We have not hurt anyone,” he stated.
Chandrasekhar also referenced the past, mentioning instances of Muslim representation in the BJP and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), highlighting leaders like Shahnawaz Hussain and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi. He noted that the party still maintains some representation from Kashmir.
The absence of Muslim ministers in the current Union cabinet has sparked discussions about the political dynamics and voting behavior within the community.
