More than 1,600 Sudanese civilians fled the town of Kertala in South Kordofan on November 28 due to escalating insecurity and increasing abuses by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as reported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Field teams from the IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix indicated that the surge in displacement is a consequence of RSF-related violence, including abductions for forced recruitment, often supported by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N). The conflict, which has intensified in the Kordofan states, has resulted in fierce fighting between the Sudanese army and the RSF, causing tens of thousands to flee. Currently, the RSF dominates the five Darfur states in western Sudan, while the army retains control in most regions of the remaining 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum. Since the conflict commenced in April 2023, it has claimed at least 40,000 lives and displaced approximately 12 million people, according to the World Health Organization. Neighboring Chad has become a refuge for many seeking safety from the ongoing violence.
