Moga Villager Trapped in Russia: Family Appeals for Government Assistance

A youth from Moga village, Buta Singh, has reportedly been recruited into the Russian Army against his will while seeking employment. The 25-year-old, originally from Chak Kania village in Punjab, traveled to Russia nearly 11 months ago through an agent based in Delhi. His family learned of his recruitment through viral videos on social media.

Buta Singh’s sister, Karamjit Kaur, revealed that he had arrived in Russia on October 24 and recently discovered he was forced to join the military and fight in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. In a video, Buta and several others, including individuals from Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir, explained that they were lured by promises of jobs in Moscow. They stated their documents were confiscated, and they were misled about employment opportunities before being sent to an army training camp, where they received weapons and were deployed to the Ukraine border.

The last communication from Buta was a voice message on WhatsApp, sent on September 11. His family, concerned for his safety, initially hoped he would earn money to improve their financial situation, having previously sold part of their flood-prone land. Before heading to Russia, Buta had worked in Singapore for nearly four years.

His father, Ram Singh, works as a daily laborer, while his mother, Paramjit Kaur, tends to livestock. Paramjit has written to the Union Defense Minister, seeking assistance for her son, expressing her fears for his safety amid reports of other young recruits facing fatal outcomes.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has acknowledged that many Indians have likely been misled by agents offering false job opportunities in construction. The ministry has taken up the matter with Russian authorities in both Delhi and Moscow.
