Modi Endorses Trump’s 20-Point Gaza Peace Proposal as Promising Solution

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a comprehensive plan aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Gaza. In a statement posted on X, PM Modi said, “We welcome President Donald J. Trump’s announcement of a comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict. It provides a viable pathway to long-term and sustainable peace, security, and development for both the Palestinian and Israeli peoples, as well as for the larger West Asian region.” He expressed hope that “all concerned will unite behind President Trump’s initiative and support this effort to bring about peace.”

On Monday, Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed their agreement on a plan to resolve the Gaza war, which began on October 7, 2023. The 20-point peace proposal includes an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and protection for civilians on all sides. It emphasizes the need for enhanced regional cooperation and international monitoring to ensure compliance. Trump has stated that only a detailed, step-by-step framework can restore stability to the region.

The effectiveness of the plan remains uncertain pending Hamas’s response. The proposal requires Hamas to agree to a ceasefire, release hostages within 72 hours, disarm, and facilitate a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. The plan also envisions a post-war transitional authority led by Trump himself. During a joint press conference, Netanyahu remarked, “I support your plan to end the war in Gaza, which achieves our war aims,” adding that if Hamas were to reject or undermine the plan, “then Israel will finish the job by itself.”

Trump assured that Israel would have his “full backing” if Hamas does not accept the deal but claimed that peace in the Middle East is “beyond very close,” characterizing the announcement as “potentially one of the great days ever in civilization.”

India was among the first nations to recognize a Palestinian state in 1988 and has consistently advocated for a two-state solution in international forums. According to the Gaza health ministry, over 65,000 Palestinians have been killed since the onset of the nearly three-year war.
