Ministry of DoNER Partners with Amazon to Enhance Bamboo Market Potential

The Ministry of Development for the North Eastern Region is actively seeking to expand market opportunities for bamboo, both domestically and internationally. According to a senior government official, the ministry is collaborating with Amazon and two other companies to facilitate this initiative.

In addition to enhancing local bamboo production, the ministry aims to explore export possibilities to neighboring countries such as Bangladesh and Myanmar. Chanchal Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), emphasized the potential for growth during a recent roadshow in Chennai, where Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia pointed out that nearly 38% of the country’s bamboo is produced in the North Eastern states. This presents a significant opportunity for Chennai, which boasts a thriving furniture manufacturing sector.

Scindia explained that the region can cultivate bamboo, process it into furniture, and subsequently export these products to other regions. The ministry’s current focus is on collaborating with Amazon and two other firms to assist self-help groups in the North East, beginning with the states of Tripura and Nagaland, to develop an end-to-end value chain for bamboo processing. He remarked, “The possibilities are endless.”

During a brief discussion with PTI, Kumar reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting bamboo products in both local and international markets. “We are going to market these products. Marketing can encompass both domestic sales and exports. Quality is crucial. These companies will aid the self-help groups in designing world-class bamboo products, such as furniture and boards, which will help farmers aggregate their products and reach end users effectively. The entire value chain needs to be strengthened,” Kumar stated.

He further detailed that once the partnerships with the companies are established, the ministry will support them in effectively marketing the bamboo products. “Our goal is to capture the domestic market first before expanding internationally, targeting markets in neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Thailand, and Myanmar,” he added.

Kumar highlighted the fact that the North East region holds the majority of the country’s bamboo resources, presenting vast opportunities for the furniture industry in Chennai.
