Microsoft will invest $17.5 billion in India as the company ramps up efforts to build digital and artificial intelligence infrastructure in one of its fastest-growing markets, CEO Satya Nadella annouced on Tuesday, during his second visit to India this year.

In a post on X, Nadella said he had a discussion with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on India’s AI ambitions and outlined Microsoft’s largest investment in Asia to date.

“Thank you, PM Narendra Modi, for an inspiring conversation on India’s AI opportunity. To support the country’s ambitions, Microsoft is committing $17.5 billion — our largest investment ever in Asia — to help build the infrastructure, skills, and sovereign capabilities needed for India’s AI-first future,” Nadella wrote on X.

Earlier this year, the Microsoft CEO had announced plans to invest $3 billion in India over two years to expand cloud and AI capacity, including new data centres and training programmes.

Nadella said at the time that India was emerging as a centre for AI development and that the investment would support the country’s growing demand for digital services.

The latest commitment significantly expands Microsoft’s India strategy as global technology companies compete to secure leadership positions in the next phase of AI-driven growth.
