Benchmark indices exhibited lackluster performance in afternoon trading on Monday, with investors exercising caution due to mixed global signals and a lack of new domestic catalysts.
As of 12:56 p.m., the Sensex dipped by 17.61 points, or 0.02 percent, settling at 83,921.10. In contrast, the Nifty saw a slight increase, rising 17.30 points, or 0.07 percent, to reach 25,739.40.
Among the top gainers on the Nifty, Shriram Finance led the way, soaring by 5.30 percent to ₹788.60, continuing its morning rally. Apollo Hospitals followed with a 1.92 percent gain, bringing its price to ₹7,828.50, while Mahindra & Mahindra rose 1.58 percent to ₹3,542.30. Additionally, State Bank of India increased by 1.17 percent to ₹948, and SBI Life Insurance climbed 1.09 percent to ₹1,977.
Conversely, Maruti Suzuki was the most significant decliner, falling 3.35 percent to ₹15,644. ITC’s stock dropped by 1.44 percent to ₹414.30, and Tata Consultancy Services decreased by 1.23 percent to ₹3,020.50. Bharat Electronics experienced a decline of 1.11 percent to ₹421.35, while Larsen & Toubro slipped 0.95 percent to ₹3,992.50.
Broader market indices outperformed the benchmarks, with the Nifty Midcap 100 gaining 0.55 percent to 60,150, while the Nifty Next 50 rose 0.80 percent to 70,384.30. Sectoral performance highlighted strength in banking and financial services, with the Nifty Bank increasing 0.54 percent to 58,086.70 and the Nifty Financial Services advancing 0.55 percent to 27,287.95.
Market breadth on the BSE remained positive, with 2,124 stocks advancing compared to 1,939 declining out of 4,303 traded. Additionally, 150 stocks reached their 52-week highs, while 70 stocks hit their 52-week lows. A total of 212 stocks touched the upper circuit limit, as opposed to 189 that fell to the lower circuit.
The session began on a subdued note, with the Sensex opening at 83,835.10, compared to its previous close of 83,938.71, while the Nifty started at 25,696.85, down from its previous close of 25,722.10.
