Benchmark indices declined on Friday as investors engaged in profit-taking after a six-day rally fuelled by optimism over easing global trade tensions between India and the US, and a possible recovery in domestic corporate earnings.
Sensex traded 251.80 points or 0.30 per cent lower at 84,304.60 at 1.03 pm, after falling over 465 points intraday. Nifty 50 dipped by 74 points or 0.29 per cent to 25,817.40. NIfty witnessed an intraday fall by 150 points.
Both the midcap and smallcap indices dipped.
Sectoral indices staged mixed performance. Metal stocks gained 1 per cent, leading the gainers. Oil & gas, realty and IT stocks traded with modest gains, while FMCG, private bank, healthcare and pharma dragged the most.
Top gainers & losers
Shares of Hindalco, ONGC, Shriram Finance, Bharti Airtel and ICICI Bank led the gainers of Nifty 50 components, while Hindustan Unilever, Cipla, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Max Health and UltraTech Cement dragged the most.

Nearly 1,184 stocks advanced, 1,741 declined and 114 remained unchanged of all the 3,039 stocks that were traded on the National Stock Exchange at the time of writing. About 48 stocks, featuring MRF, Hindalco, Federal Bank, Indian Bank and Cholamandalam Financial Holdings, scaled to their 52-week high, while 29 hit the 52-week low. In addition, 49 stocks hit the upper circuit and 38 hit the lower circuit.
Most active stocks by volume
Most active stocks by volume of shares traded were Vodafone Idea with 50.21 crore shares, Sammaan Capital with 4.59 crore shares, TATAGOLD with 4.43 crore shares, Yes Bank with 4.40 crore shares, and PTC India Financial Services (PFS) with 4.31 crore shares changed hands at around 12.51 pm.
Midcap & smallcap movers
Under the midcap segment, National Aluminium, Blue Star, Cummins India, Oberoi Realty, Motilal OFS gained 2-4 per cent, while Colgate, IGL, Patanjali, Godfrey Phillips and Jubiland Foods depreciated 1-3 per cent.
CreditAccess, Signature Global, Aptus, Hindustan Copper and PNB Housing soared 2-5 per cent under the smallcap basket, while Aegis Vopak, Jindal Saw, Aster DM, MCX and Delhivery dragged 2-3 per cent.
