Maharashtra Budget Fails to Address Crucial Election Commitments

The initial budget introduced by the Maharashtra government under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has faced significant backlash for neglecting crucial pre-election commitments. Among the most criticized omissions are the promised farm loan waiver and the raised monthly allowance under the Chief Minister Ladki Bahin Scheme, which was expected to increase from ₹1,500 to ₹2,100.

During the budget announcement, the government did not address the farm loan waiver, a significant electoral pledge. However, Chief Minister Fadnavis later assured reporters that all commitments would be honored in the upcoming years. Regarding the Ladki Bahin Scheme, he mentioned that efforts are underway to implement the increase to ₹2,100 per month, but, for the time being, beneficiaries would still receive the current amount of ₹1,500.

Fadnavis emphasized Maharashtra’s robust economic performance, noting that the state’s GST collections exceed the national average and that Maharashtra ranks first in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), startups, and GST revenue.

Opposition members, including Uddhav Thackeray, the leader of Shiv Sena (Thackeray), have criticized the government for misleading voters. He declared, “This budget ultimately benefits contractors rather than ordinary citizens,” accusing the BJP-led coalition of securing a significant majority through insincere promises.

Additionally, Shiv Sena (Thackeray) leader Ambadas Danve condemned the government’s actions, pointing out that farmers who postponed loan repayments in hopes of a waiver now feel deceived. Opposition parties have pledged to persist in urging the government to fulfill its promises.
