Capitals Triumph Over Super Giants in SA20 Showdown
Durban: The Pretoria Capitals notched their second win in the ongoing SA20 season on Wednesday, January 7, by defeating the Durban Super Giants by 15 runs. The spotlight shone on Shai Hope, who delivered a spectacular performance with an unbeaten century. However, it was Lungi Ngidi who made headlines by achieving the first-ever hat-trick in SA20 history.
Ngidi’s historic feat occurred in the 18th over of the innings, as the Super Giants required 44 runs from the final three overs. Returning to bowl the last over of his spell, Ngidi showcased his variety and skill, dismissing David Wiese, Sunil Narine, and Gerald Coetzee with consecutive deliveries, thereby etching his name in the record books.
Jos Buttler, who was batting on 74, found himself stranded at the non-striker’s end, witnessing the drama unfold. While Buttler managed to score 22 runs in the penultimate over, reducing the target to 18 runs required from the final six balls, the Super Giants were ultimately bowled out as the England batter attempted to monopolize the strike.
Ngidi’s hat-trick was pivotal to the Capitals’ victory, allowing them to maintain their composure in a tightly contested match. Notably, this was Ngidi’s first appearance in this season where he took wickets, and he is eager to maintain this form throughout the tournament. The fast bowler is also confirmed to play for the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026, marking a milestone achievement in SA20.
Shai Hope Sets SA20 Record
While Ngidi’s accomplishments took center stage, his teammate Shai Hope also made history by recording the highest individual score in SA20. Opening the batting, Hope struck an impressive century, remaining unbeaten on 118 runs off 69 balls, featuring nine fours and nine sixes. His remarkable innings helped the Pretoria Capitals post a total of 201 runs for the loss of four wickets, a score that ultimately proved to be decisive in securing the win.
