Lex Fridman Fasts 45 Hours for PM Modi Interview: Insights on Fasting

Lex Fridman, a computer scientist and podcaster, recently shared that he undertook a 45-hour water fast as a tribute to his conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During their discussion, Fridman mentioned his fasting experience to align himself spiritually for the interview.

“I’m currently fasting; it’s been nearly two days—45 hours—just water and no food. This is in honor of our conversation, to help me get into the right mindset. I’ve read that you often fast for extended periods,” Fridman said, prompting Modi to elaborate on his own experiences with fasting.

In response, Prime Minister Modi spoke about the advantages of fasting, highlighting its potential to sharpen one’s senses, improve mental clarity, and foster discipline. He emphasized that fasting transcends merely abstaining from food; it is a scientifically grounded practice woven deeply into traditional and Ayurvedic customs. “I must say I’m truly honored that you’re fasting as a celebration of this conversation. In India, our spiritual heritage is integral to our way of life. The Supreme Court has stated that Hinduism is not just about rituals and worship methods, but is fundamentally a philosophy that shapes our lives. Our scriptures explore the enhancement of body, mind, intellect, soul, and humanity, outlining various methods, including fasting, to achieve these goals. However, it’s important to note that fasting is just one aspect of this broader philosophy,” Modi articulated.

He expounded on how fasting influences cognition, enhancing one’s ability to think critically and obtain fresh insights. “It serves as a significant tool for harmonizing both the inner and outer self. When you fast, your life experiences can change dramatically. As you mentioned fasting on water for two days, you may notice that your senses—especially smell, touch, and taste—become exceptionally heightened. You might even detect subtle scents, like the aroma of water, that you wouldn’t normally notice, or more vividly observe the details of a flower you’ve seen many times before. Your ability to observe and respond becomes noticeably sharper,” he remarked.

Modi also shared how fasting can stimulate creative thought. “Many people mistakenly believe that fasting is simply about not eating. But the essence of fasting is far more nuanced. If someone goes without food due to hardship, that doesn’t equate to fasting. True fasting involves preparation. I typically spend five to seven days prior to fasting engaging in various Ayurvedic and yoga practices to properly prepare my body,” he explained.

He discussed the importance of hydration before starting a fast for effective detoxification, noting that, contrary to feeling lethargic, fasting often energizes him and enhances his productivity. “I focus on hydrating adequately before I begin the fast. This detoxification process optimally prepares my body. For me, fasting is an act of devotion and discipline. While I go about my daily tasks during a fast, my thoughts remain introspective and inwardly focused, creating a transformative experience for me. My approach to fasting isn’t merely the result of reading or family traditions; it stems from my own personal encounters with the practice,” Modi added.

Throughout his discussion with Lex Fridman, PM Narendra Modi covered a wide array of topics, articulating his vision for India’s future.
