Legal Troubles for Parvesh Verma: Controversial ‘Punjab Cars in Delhi’ Comment Sparks Notices

Delhi Elections 2025: Numerous individuals have issued a series of legal notices to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Delhi seat, Parvesh Verma, concerning his comments about ‘Punjab cars in Delhi’. The legal notices threaten further action unless the BJP leader issues a public apology, as reported by NDTV.

Parvesh Verma’s ‘Punjab Cars in Delhi’ Comments

The BJP’s Parvesh Verma ignited controversy ahead of the forthcoming Delhi Assembly elections by claiming that thousands of vehicles bearing Punjab registration plates are inundating the national capital.

During a media interaction, Verma insinuated that these ‘Punjab registration’ vehicles are being utilized by members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), including Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, and other officials, to influence the electorate in Delhi.

Parvesh Verma expressed concerns over security, especially with Republic Day approaching, questioning the intent behind the Punjab vehicles and their occupants. He further alleged that employees from the Punjab government, where AAP is in power, were dispatched to Delhi masquerading as AAP volunteers to campaign for the party, asserting they were distributing money and alcohol to sway voters.

Verma disclosed that he has filed defamation lawsuits against Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann for supposedly misrepresenting his comments, demanding ₹100 crore in damages and an apology within 48 hours.

Details of the Legal Notices Sent to Parvesh Verma

In reaction to Verma’s statements, several individuals from both Delhi and Punjab have dispatched legal notices urging him to issue a public apology.

These notices label his statements as “baseless” and “misleading,” particularly in the context of the upcoming Republic Day festivities, as reported by NDTV.

One notice explicitly argues that Verma’s assertions about a security threat posed by these vehicles are groundless and amount to ‘hate speech’, according to the media report.

Statements by Bhagwant Mann

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann condemned Verma’s remarks as deeply offensive to Punjabis.

The AAP leader articulated that such comments are not only disrespectful but also portray Punjabis as a security menace, which he finds intolerable.

CM Mann contended that there are no prohibitions on individuals from any part of India visiting Delhi, and he criticized the BJP for perpetuating such narratives against Punjabis.

He remarked that every Punjabi is feeling aggrieved by these allegations and demanded an apology from the BJP, asserting that casting doubt on their patriotism is a perilous political maneuver.

Delhi Elections 2025

As Delhi gears up for its assembly elections scheduled for February 5, 2025, tensions between the AAP and BJP are intensifying. The electoral contest promises to be intense, with Arvind Kejriwal leading AAP against BJP’s Parvesh Verma and Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit for the Delhi seat.

Recently, the political dynamics in Delhi have been heavily influenced by the AAP, which achieved a significant victory in 2020 by clinching 62 out of 70 seats.
