Ishan Kishan anchored Jharkhand’s innings with a commanding unbeaten century as they established a solid base against Tamil Nadu on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy season on October 15. Coming to the crease with Jharkhand struggling at 79 for 3, Kishan displayed both poise and aggression, scoring 125 runs off 183 deliveries. His innings showcased precise shot selection and an attacking mindset, providing a confidence boost as he seeks to reintegrate himself into Test cricket.

Kishan received substantial support from opener Sharandeep Singh, who contributed a steady 48 runs, and lower-order batsman Sahil Raj, who remained unbeaten with 64 runs. Their partnerships played a crucial role in helping Jharkhand recover, ending the day at 307 for 6.

For Tamil Nadu, left-arm pacer Gurjapneet Singh made notable contributions, taking three wickets with the new ball. DT Chandrasekar, making a return to the Ranji Trophy, also provided key breakthroughs to restrict Jharkhand’s scoring.

In a separate match at Eden Gardens, Bengal veteran pacer Mohammed Shami found his rhythm after a slow start against Uttarakhand. Although initially struggling, Shami ignited a dramatic collapse by taking three wickets in four balls late in Uttarakhand’s innings, aiding in their dismissal for 213 runs. Skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran also proved effective with the ball, utilizing reverse swing to good effect.

Bengal’s response, however, encountered difficulties as they lost Easwaran on the first ball of their innings. At the end of the day’s play, Bengal stood at 8 for 1, with Sudip Chatterjee and Sudip Kumar Gharami at the crease, contending with fading light and mounting pressure.

As the Ranji Trophy season continues, both teams aim to build on their promising starts, with key players like Kishan and Shami eager to make an impact after recent absences from the spotlight.
