KCR’s Surprising Assembly Poll Candidates Leave Left Parties Reeling

Communist Party of India (CPI) State Secretary Kunamneni Sambashiva Rao, along with State Deputy Secretary Palla Venkat Reddy and former MP Aziz Pasha, addressed a press conference at Makhdoom Bhavan in Hyderabad on June 13, 2023, highlighting recent political developments in Telangana.

The announcement by Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) President and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao regarding party candidates for 115 of the 119 Assembly constituencies has taken the CPI and CPI (Marxist) by surprise. These two Left parties had formed an unconditional alliance with the ruling BRS during the Munugode by-elections, and were optimistic about securing seats in the upcoming Assembly elections through the partnership.

The CPI is particularly focused on fielding candidates in Huzurabad, Wyra, Kothagudem, Munugode, Bellampalli, and Devarakonda constituencies, which it has represented previously. Meanwhile, the CPI(M) has expressed an interest in contesting in Miryalaguda, Palair, Bhadrachalam, Ibrahimpatnam, Madhira, and Nalgonda.

Both parties maintain that the BRS’s victory in the Munugode bypoll was significantly aided by their support. They were anticipating a meeting with Mr. Rao to negotiate seat arrangements but were left without options following his announcement, which included strong candidates across the constituencies of interest to them.

The situation now compels the CPI and CPI(M) to consider a potential alliance with the Congress Party, making their recent secretariat meeting crucial. While ideological barriers may be minimal for a Left-Congress coalition, practical challenges loom due to the Congress’s strong candidacy presence in the constituencies in question. Additionally, Left leaders have consistently dismissed the idea of collaborating with Congress in the Assembly elections until now.
